Common questions

› Does Spanna ever see my database data?
Desktop connects directly to your database. The web client routes requests through a stateless connection-pool proxy so it can run from a browser — the proxy sees the operations you initiate but no Mongo content is logged or retained. Free and Pro both use the same proxy with tighter per-tier rate limits applied.
› What's the difference between Free and Pro?
Free gives you the full product on every surface — web, desktop, and (preview) mobile — with the standard limits (5 saved / 2 active connections, 100-doc page sizes). Pro adds the depth tools you grow into: saved queries + library, cross-connection copy/move, index advisor + what-if, set diff, schema insights, advanced import/export, plus higher limits (unlimited connections, 1000-doc pages, unlimited query history).
› Do I need an account to use the web client?
Yes — the web client requires a free account so we can attach the right Vault and connection list. Desktop is local-first and works without an account; sign in only if you want encrypted sync across desktop installs.
› Can the web client connect to my localhost / VPN / SSH-tunnelled MongoDB?
No — the web client routes queries through our edge proxy, which can only reach MongoDB that's accessible from the public internet (e.g. MongoDB Atlas, or self-hosted with a public endpoint and TLS). For localhost, VPN-only, or SSH-tunnelled databases, use the desktop app — it connects directly from your machine, no proxy involved.
› How is Pro billed?
Monthly at $19, or annually at $149 — you save about 35% on the annual plan (roughly four months free). Cancel anytime; we don't claw back days you've already paid for.
› What happens if I have a Vault issue?
The Vault is designed to stay invisible during normal use. If something goes wrong you can export your connections or reset the Vault and re-save the affected credentials. See /docs/connections for the recovery flows.
› MongoDB SRV DNS lookup failed — what does this mean?
Some ISPs use DNS servers that don't reliably support SRV/TXT records. Switch DNS to Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8), or use a non-SRV connection string (mongodb://…).
